Frequently Asked Questions

What is the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation's tax identification number?
The "USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation" is the organization charged with receiving gifts for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. It is designated a tax-exempt institution under the Federal Internal Revenue Service Code Section 501 (c) (3), and its tax ID is 11-6037948.

Why does the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy need my support?
The United States Federal Government provides only a base of funding that supports basic operations at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. However, limited resources are inadequate to support an institution whose strategic goal is to be the world leader in maritime education. Only through enhanced private support will the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy realize its full potential. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy must rely on private donors to support everything from basic needs to major Academy initiatives. Gifts and endowments also enable this institution to weather the inevitable "lean years," when budget cuts and competing priorities result in greater challenges.

If you would like to restrict your gift to a specific area, we ask that you be broad enough in your description so that those funds are used properly in a timely manner. (Good Example: I would like to restrict my gift to the Baseball Team. Bad Example: I would like to restrict my gift to 20 baseballs.) The USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation requires all restrictions to be made in writing and submitted with the donation. If you are making an online donation, you have space provided to include any notes and instructions.

What is Planned Giving?
Planned Giving is a set of ways a donor can leave money/assets to the Academy at his/her death; or a way to invest money so that the donor receives benefits during his/her life and then bequeaths the remaining funds to the Academy. Examples include will provisions, life insurance policies, trusts, and charitable gift annuities.

What is an endowment?
An endowment preserves capital, overcomes inflation and provides long-term, reliable income to support the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. For example, a $100,000 scholarship gift might be awarded to deserving students at $5,000 per year -- meaning the scholarship fund will be depleted in 20 years. But if that $100,000 were used to establish an endowment, the gift would be invested and a portion of the earnings used to award scholarships. Another portion would be used to increase the principal and offset investment costs. The endowment would therefore continue to grow over time, supporting scholarships for as long as the Academy exists. The minimum amount required to start an endowment is $50,000.
