Memorial Arbors

ABOUT THE MEMORIAL ARBORS

The Memorial Arbors at the United States Merchant Marine Academy was established in 1976 as a unique shrine honoring the memory of Kings Point’s alumni, faculty, staff, their families, and friends of the Academy. Located adjacent to the US Merchant Marine Memorial Chapel and the Academy’s War Memorial, the Memorial Arbors stand in tranquil dignity overlooking Long Island Sound. The Arbors contain bronze plaques bearing the names of those memorialized.

  • North Arbor, which is reserved for alumni, faculty, staff and midshipmen, contains the propeller of MS Courier, a CIMA VI-class vessel, a fitting symbol of the mariner’s profession.
  • South Arbor contains a statue from the Chrysler collection and displays plaques of Kings Pointers’ relatives and members of the “Kings Point family.”

Nearby, in the Chapel, the “Memorial Book” is on permanent display. This book contains the sponsor’s name and information appearing on each plaque. A Memorial Service is held every year at the Arbors on the Saturday of Homecoming weekend (in the fall of each year).

Plaques The cast bronze plaques are four inches by two inches in size. Text on the plaques is restricted to four lines of 26 letters and spaces per line. The cost of a Memorial Arbors plaque is $150. This covers the cost of casting the plaque, emplacement, perpetual care of the plaque and Arbors, and a page in the Memorial Book. The deadline for ordering plaques in time for the Homecoming Memorial Service is June 1st.
