The 12th ranked Mariner wrestling squad placed 4th among the seven academies at the16th annual All-Academy finals this weekend in Annapolis, MD. The team gained a total of 51.0 points as they continued to build on their successful season.
Senior Eric Vincent (Trussville, AL) led the Mariners as the squad’s top finisher, winning the 197-pound weight class. Eric Vincent, the #1 seed in the 197-pound weight class, sailed straight through to the crown, defeating Navy’s Charles Carafano 9-3 in a regular decision. Vincent is just the second Division III wrestler to ever claim a title at the All-Academies Wrestling Tournament. Teammate Vincent Renaut won 165-pound title at last year's event.
Wrestling at 125 pounds, Junior Jordan Alfaro (Fayetteville, NC), the #2 seed, fell to Air Force Academy’s Sam Shepard in a 9-5 regular decision in the second round. Alfaro lost to VA Military Institute’s, Jonathon Pope 8-6 in a reg. decision for third place. Junior Dan Twito (Cedar Falls, IA), the #2 seed, fell to the #1 seed, Navy’s Bryce Saddoris in the championship round of the 157-pound weight class, 11-4 in a regular decision. Similarly, in the 165-pound weight class, the #1 seed junior Vincent Renaut (Plymouth, MA), strived through to the championship round only to fall to the Navy’s #2 seed, Robby Neill 3-2 in a regular decision. Following Renaut, Junior Justin Diesel (Minisink Valley, NY), the #4 seed, fell to the Citadel’s J.C. Oddo, the #1 seed, in the second round. While, the 149-pound weight class, sophomore Martin Bell (Eaton Rapids, MI) fell to The Citadel’s Derek Royster in the second round, additionally.
